A BILINGUAL INFORMATION SYSTEM: The Computational Linguistic Engineering of English and Mäori for Speech Perception and Generation

This research applies computational linguistic methods for integrating two languages into one intelligent information system. Scientific engineering models accompanied with comparative methods are used to investigate the common linguistic characteristics between Mäori and New Zealand English. This approach provides new techniques for true bilingual based speech recognition, language understanding and speech generation. A bilingual information system has data, information and knowledge about two separate languages, so when accessed, the system provides various media formats such as text, audio, video and graphics to communicate in a seamless manner in either one or both those languages. To extend the scope of a bilingual system to span across many operating platforms, it will also provide a greater entry level for users interested in natural-language processing with human computerbased interaction.
